Organization of Journalists without Borders said that Sri Lanka’s media freedom would be subjected to a threat again as a result of the decision of President Maitripala Sirisena to revive the Press Council.
The organisation said further that as a result of this the authorities would have the opportunity to control media according to their whims and fancies.
Organisation of Journalists without Borders request that instead of the press council an independent council that ensures opportunity for self-monitoring be appointed.
The organisation recalled that there were instances when the former government used the press council improperly.
Similarly the press council could be used to impose various limits as well as imprisonment on journalists.
Organisation of Journalists without Borders Asia Pacific Head Benjamin Smile said that the hope of freeing Sri Lanka from politics was lost as a result of re-establishing the press council machinery.
