Various opinions have been voiced after the UPFA declared to field former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest the upcoming General Election.
However, many have set sights on whether the former President plans to contest from the Kurunegala district.
Former Minister T.B. Ekanayake stated today that former President is due to contest from Kurunegala District.
Accordingly, he added that nominations for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be handed over under the UPFA ticket for Kurunegala District in due course.
Meanwhile, following a UPFA party leaders’ meeting convened at the Opposition Leader’s office today, the journalists enquired from SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadarshana Yapa from which district, the former President would contest.
In response he stated that the party came to a common decision to field him, to prevent division within the party and after taking his popularity and the requests made by the party members into consideration.
SLFP General Secretary also stated that the decision was taken after a lengthy discussion, to unite the party and to win the election.
He also stated that support from all factions is needed to defeat the UNP, and he doesn’t believe that private matters should be considered in politics.
