Suicide car bombs kills 21 in Baghdad

A suicide bomb has killed at least 21 people in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, police and medical officials have said.

At least 13 civilians were killed in the attack, which took place at a police checkpoint at the entrance to the Kadhimiya district.

Many of those killed were reportedly on their way to a Shia shrine in the area.

Iraq is experiencing an upsurge in instability. The government is battling Islamist militants, who have seized cities in the country's north-west.

At least five of those killed in the bombing were policemen, security sources said.

The area is home to the Musa al-Khadim shrine, a site of pilgrimage for many Muslims.
