UNP working committee decides to contest alone at the General Election alone

The UNP has decided to contest alone in the forthcoming general election.

UNP Media Spokesman and Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam stated that this decision was taken by the central working committee which met at the party headquarters -  Sirikotha - this morning.

In addition, the central working committee has decided to authorize the party leader to appoint the nomination board.

Minister Kariyawasam stated that the working committee also decided to convene a party convention, soon after parliament is dissolved.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has stated that his party proposals for the 20th Constitutional Amendment have already been submitted.

The 20th Amendment is scheduled to be presented to parliament next week.

However, the Premier has informed the central working committee that the forthcoming general election would be held under the preferential system, and the new system proposed under the 20th Amendment could be in force afterwards.
