Verdict whether bail should be granted to Vaas Gunawardana today

The verdict as to whether to grant or not grant bail to the five defendants including former DIG Vaas Gunawardhana remanded over the charge of killing Bambalapitiya millionaire businessman Mohamed Siyaam is scheduled to be revealed today.

That is before a three-member high court bench of judges comprising Justices Lalith Jayasuriya, Kusalaa Sarojinee Weerawardhana and Aamendra Seneviratne.

Lawyers appearing on behalf of the five defendants including Vaas Gunawardhana pointed out that these defendants have been detained in remand for more than two years and that according to the Bail Act it was not possible to detain a suspect beyond two years.

The three-member bench of judges said yesterday that this verdict would be revealed today in accordance with request for releasing the defendants on bail.

Except Vaas Gunawardhana’s son the others out of the six defendants who have been accused in the case of the killing of Mohamed Siyaam have thus requested for bail.

While former Attorney General Paalitha Fernando had petitioned the then Chief Justice Mohan Peiris to have this case heard without a jury not before a special bench of judges comprising three high court judges considering it  a special court matter, this case is being heard before a three-member bench of judges in view of the said request.

The attorney general has filed charges against the defendants with regard to abetting and assisting in, and killing Mohamed Siyaam between April 4th and May 22nd in 2013.
