The Education Ministry has decided to limit the grade one school admissions per class to 35 students with effect from next year.
Currently the maximum number of students admitted to a grade one class is 40.
The Education Ministry said that the number of students admitted per class would be limited to 35 from next year according to the verdict on a Fundamental Rights petition submitted before the Supreme Court with regard to admission of grade one students in 2007.
The Ministry said that while currently there were 8038 schools island-wide, the average number of students per grade one class in 914 schools was 44.2.
The average number of students per grade one class in the remaining majority of schools was 23.4.
