A group of protestors in Hambanthota pelt stones at a police jeep
Tuesday, 19 May 2015 - 12:50
A group of workers attached to the Hambantota Port staged a protest this morning in front of their working place.
The protest was staged against a decision by the port administration to provide workers with transparent bags for them to bring in food and other private belongings.
The protesters give vent to their anger on police by hurling stones at them after a police jeep was driven over a protester’s foot.
Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that the driver of the jeep has been arrested after the incident.
The authorities decided to provide transparent bags after several complaints that various goods inside the harbor were getting misplaced.
However it is stated that the workers who refused transparent bags and brought their own bags as usual have been removed from the port premises.
Hambantota police stated that the jeep was damaged due to pelting stones.
The protester who received minor injuries has been hospitalized.
Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera expressed his views to our news team about the incident.
