Remains of Asgiri Thera placed for public respect


The remains of the Asgiri Chapter Chief Prelate of Shyamopali Great Sect - Agga Maha Panditha late Udugama Sri Buddharakkita Thera are lying for public respect at the Udugama Temple of the Asgiri Temple complex in Kandy.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa also paid his last respect to the remains of the late Chief Prelate at a private funeral parlor in Colombo before the remains were taken to Kandy this morning.

Several provincial politicians and ordinary Buddhists waited beside Kandy road this morning to pay their last respect to the late Thera.

The remains of the late Nayake Thera are scheduled to be transferred from the Udugama Temple to the Pra-Upali Memorial Hall at 8 o’clock tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe stated in a condolence message over the passing away of the Asgiri Chief Prelate that the late Nayake Thera was a great and humble member of the Maha Sangha.

The Premier said that the late Nayake Thera performed a great social service and served lavishly in performing traditional rites of the Sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic and its development.

At the same time, Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva has also issued a condolence message over the demise of the Asgiri Chief Prelate.

The opposition leader stated that the late Nayake Thera who excelled in Buddhist doctrines and disciplines was praised not only by his own Nikaya but also by members of other Nikayas.
