Remains of Mahanayake thera brought to Sri Lanka


The sacred remains of the deceased Chief Incumbent of the Asgiriya Chapter were brought to the island by a special plane at about 9.05 last night.

Subsequently the convoy carrying the sacred remains arrived at a funeral parlour in Colombo.

Government has declared Sunday, April 12th as a Day of Mourning for the late Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter of the Siam Sect, Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera.

The revered Buddhist monk, passed away last morning after a month-long illness.

The Chief Prelate was receiving treatment at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for the past month.

The cremation of the most venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Maha Nayaka Thero will take place at the Police Grounds in Kandy at 2 pm on Sunday with full state patronage.

Similarly Buddhist Affairs Commissioner, Chandraprema Gamagey, has requested that a yellow flag be hoisted in front of all houses and that the national flag be hoisted at half-mast in front of State institutions.

This morning the sacred remains will be taken to Kandy and will be kept at the Pra-upali commemoration hall of the Asgiriya temple for the public to pay their last respects.
