Decision on Opposition Leader today

A decisive week in parliament begins from today.

That is with the disclosure of the speaker‘s decision with regard to who will be appointed as Opposition Leader.

With several MPs of the UPFA that has the majority in parliament receiving ministries in the new Government, a problematic situation cropped up with regard to the Opposition Leader’s post.

Several UPFA constituent parties have informed the Speaker that MEP leader former Minister Dinesh Gunawardhana should be appointed as Opposition Leader.

In addition to this there is another view that the TNA should be given the Opposition Leader’s position.

Meanwhile Speaker is scheduled to reveal tomorrow the decision given by the Supreme Court with regard to the draft 19th constitutional amendment Act.

The Supreme Court three-judge bench concluded the hearing with regard to the 19 petitions submitted to the Supreme Court in connection with the draft Act.

The debate with regard to the 19th constitutional amendment has been fixed for the 9th and 10th this month in parliamentary agenda book.

Voting with regard to this will take place on 10th afternoon.

However leader of the house Minister Lakshman Kiriella said at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday that if support for this amendment was not forthcoming, there would be a problem with regard to the necessity of parliament.
