Malinga back, de Villiers rested as 'precaution'

Lasith Malinga made a return to competitive cricket for the first time in almost five months after recovering from ankle surgery as he lined up against South Africa in the World Cup warm-up match at Hagley Oval.

Malinga is preparing to face New Zealand in the tournament opener and although he admitted to feeling pain with every step he takes, he has vowed to play through that in pursuit of a major trophy.

But Malinga would have to wait to test his ankle after Hashim Amla decided South Africa's bowlers would make first use of the surface under cloudy skies and with a swirling breeze surrounding Hagley Oval.

Amla was captaining South Africa in place of AB de Villiers who was left out as a precaution due "tightness in his right hip" according to CSA.
