A 24 hour train strike from midnight today


Gazette notification declaring train service an essential service submitted to presidential secretariat.

The railway trade unions are scheduled to stage a 24 hour token strike from midnight today against the finance ministry not removing salary anomalies even after receiving the cabinet approval.

Train engine drivers, guards, controllers and station masters jointly carried out a 48 hour strike on 21st of this month.

On the 23rd the trade unions met again and decided to carry out a token strike from midnight of every Thursday till their problems are solved.

The Transport and Civil Aviation Services Ministry has decided to declare the Government Railway, an essential service.

Accordingly, retired engine drivers, guards, station masters, signal supervisors and track supervisors will be recalled for service.

Subject Minister Ashok Abeysingha stated that the gazette notification declaring train service an essential service has been submitted to the presidential secretariat to obtain the signature of the President.
