Postponed estates workers discussion resumes today

The discussion about the increase of estate workers’ daily wage up to 1000 rupees that had been postponed for two days, will be held at Temple Trees this afternoon.

Parliamentarians including Tamil Progressive Alliance Ministers Mano Ganeshan and  Palani Digambaram as well as non-cabinet Labour Minister Raveendra Samaraweera  and Minister Naveen Dissanayake too will participate in the discussion.

Minister Palani Digamabaram said that in addition to these, the Estate  Employers’ Union and the Estate Wokers’ Unions  would participate in the discussion.

Although the discussion had been scheduled to be held two days  ago, it was postponed till today due to various reasons.

An Estate Workers’ wage increase agreement was signed  on 28th  last month at Temple Trees with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the chair.

In that agreement it was agreed to increase the estate workers’ daily wage to Rs. 700/=.

Similarly, although the Rs.30/=  fixed allowance was raised to Rs. 50/=, the Rs.60/= attendance allowance  and the Rs.140/= production allowance  were not included in the agreement.

Several Ministers  including Tamil Progressive Alliance leader, Minister Mano Ganeshan had said that they would resign from their ministerial posts said that through the  agreement injustice would be meted out to the estate workers and that therefore they would resign from their  ministerial posts unless the estate workers’ daily wage was not increased up to Rs. 1000/=.  Subsequent to this it was decided to resume the discussion.
