CEYPETCO employees engage in strike action demanding former minister Arjuna Ranatunga’s arrest


The strike action launched by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation employees last night demanding that former minister Arjuna Ranatunga be arrested over the shooting incident which took place in the Petroleum corporation complex in Dematagoda, continues.

Ceylon Petroleum Corporation's Sri Lanka Freedom Workers Union President Bandula Saman Kumara noted that employees attached to the Petroleum storage and distributors of Kolonnawa, Sapugaskanda, Muturajawela have joined the strike.

When former minister of petroleum, Arjuna Ranatunga had entered the complex last evening, to acquire several documents, the CEYPETCO employees had displayed protest noting that his action was illegal.

A tense situation erupted as a result.

3 individuals were injured owing to a shooting initiated by a security officer of former Minister, and were admitted to the Colombo national hospital during which one succumbed to injuries.

The deceased is a 34 year old.

One of the injured is currently receiving treatment at the ICU.

Police media spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekera noted that the respective security officer has been arrested.

Due to the conditions prevailing the former minister was held in the complex for over three hours.

Police STF, anti riot squad and water bowsers were called on to the location, and Former minister Arjuna Ranatunga was escorted out of the premises, disguised in an STF uniform.
