President Mahinda Rajapaksa to receive India’s highest honour

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his government confer Bharat Ratna on President Mahinda Rajapaksa under whose leadership the LTTE was eliminated.
Swamy in his letter to Modi said,
"This elimination of the LTTE must be recognised in India as a welcome contribution to our national security."
The prime minister has acknowledged receipt of Swamy’s letter.
Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of India. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is conferred “in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order”
Recommendations for the Bharat Ratna are made by the Indian Prime Minister to the the country’s President.
Receivers of this prestigious awards includes Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, Mother Teresa and the late South African President Nelson Mandela.
