
Rathana thero shows how 2/3rd majority could be obtained for the 19th amendment

The proposal for the 19th Amendment to the Constitution prepared by Pivithuru Hetak national council was released yesterday for public opinion.
During the ceremony held at the BMICH to release the proposal, Rathana Thera presented the first copy of the proposals to the UNP National Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Later it was presented to Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa as well.
Representing the government, Ministers Dinesh Gunawardana, Wasudeva Nanayakkara, DEW Gunasekera, Dr. Tissa Vitharana, Patalee Champika Ranawaka, Deputy Ministers Nandimitra Ekanayake and Earl Gunasekera participated.
Opposition MPs Karu Jayasuriya, Wijedasa Rajapaksa and Sunil Handunnetti and TULF leader V. Ananda sangaree also participated.
The 19th constitutional amendment has made proposals to several chapters of the Constitution including a proposal to limit executive powers of the President.
It has also proposed to hold the Presidential election and the general election on the same day and to declare the post of president automatically null and void in the event parliament is dissolved.
