Sergeant who assaulted a woman in Rathnapura town reinstated

The police officer, who was interdicted from service for assaulting a woman at the Ratnapura town, has been reinstated with immediate effect.
Police media spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told that the police officer concerned has been attached to the Awissawela police station.
A video footage of a police officer assaulting a woman near the Ratnapura town main bus stand was first published through via face-book social networking website.
A person who had been at the site had secretly videoed the incident and released it to the internet.
While it was published through mass media as well, the attack had been carried out by a police sergeant attached to the Ratnapura police station.
Subsequently the police headquarters took steps to terminate his services.
Victim of the assault case Weerasinghe Aarachchilaagey Kaanthi-lathaa alias Batti went to the police headquarters on 3rd of this month and handed over a written complaint to the IGP.
That was in accordance with an open appeal the police media spokesman had made requesting that she comes to the police and submits a statement with regard to the incident.
Meanwhile she had also filed a fundamental rights petition at the Supreme Court petitioning for a 50-million rupee compensation over the violation of fundamental rights.
The police said that steps had been taken to reinstate the police sergeant concerned after police investigations.
