Five-member bench to decide duration of President’s term of Office

Chief Justice has appointed a 5-judge bench to decide whether President's term is 5 or 6 years.
The decision has been made following a reference made by the President.
The issue will be argued tomorrow (Jan. 11).
The bench will comprise, Chief Justice Priyasath Dep, Judges Eva Wanasundera, Buwaneka Aluwihare, Sisira de Abrew and K. T. Chitrasiri
The Chief Justice has made these appointments after President Maithripala Sirisena sought the Supreme Court’s opinion on whether he could hold office until 2021.
On Monday, the President, in a written reference, asked the Chief Justice if there is any impediment barring him from continuing in the office for six years.
However, the 19th Amendment which was passed in 2015 stipulates a 5-year term of Office for Executive President.
