UNP and UPFA clash in Bandarawela; 3 hospitalized


According to Police media spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana a full scale investigation will be carried out regarding the incidents which took place in Bandarawela and Diyatalawa areas during the election day.

2 groups of UNP and UPFA members clashed inside the Bandarawela Police station today.

Mayor of Bandarawela Municipal Council Chaminda Wijesiri who received injuries following the clash was admitted to Badulla General Hospital while 2 others have been admitted to Diyatalawa Base Hospital.

Mayor of Bandarawela Municipal Council who represents UNP stated that he and a group of persons came to lodge a complaint at Bandarawela police regarding an act of violence.

Several MPs of the ruling party also arrived at Bandarawela Police to lodge a complaint regarding an act of violence.

Police stated that the two groups clashed following a heated argument.

Meanwhile, MP Rohana Pushpakumara speaking regarding the incident stated that they too had arrived to lodge a complaint and that a heated situation followed.

Meanwhile, Police stated that they will take action against anyone who breaches election laws or engages in violence despite their positions.

Police media spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told that measures will be taken to deploy emergency road blocks and patrol vehicles during post election period.

About 12,500 police and STF officers have been deployed to maintain security in the Uva province.

Police media spokesman further requests the public not to be deceived by false rumours and to conduct themselves peacefully during the post election period
