This is the saddening moment a US news anchor informs viewers his cancer is terminal live on air.

Dave Benton, a 51-year-old anchor for WCIA 3 News in Illinois, was recently told his brain tumour was too large to be operated on.

The husband and father of two has decided that a different course of treatment, which will attempt to slow the tumour's growth, is his best plan of action.

Despite the devastating verdict, Mr Benton remains positive and says he will try to make the best of the days he has left.

He said: "The goal here is to have a few more days and to make them the best that they can be in the life that I have.

"As you know I'm a born again Christian, I believe that I am in God's hands.

"I am at peace and I know that he is going to take care of the days ahead and that the goal here is to have the best ones possible."

Mr Benton, who has anchored the show for nine years, also spoke of his gratitude towards the watchers who have supported him.

"The viewers have so supported me through this and I want to let them know that they too are fighting cancer and other health issues.

"They too deserve that support because it's not just really only about me."
