Four university students hospitalized after water and tear gas attack

Four university students are receiving treatment at Colombo National Hospital for injuries sustained during the police water and tear gas assault directed against the inter-university students’ federation and other students’ unions that carried out a protest in Colombo yesterday.
The march was staged to demand the abolishing of the Malabe Private Medical College.
Inter-university students’ federation convener Lahiru Weerasekera said that last night surgery had been performed on one of the students.
During the protest march that began at Sri Jayewardenepura University at noon made its way towards Colombo along High Level Road was severe traffic congestion.
Mirihana Police officers tried to deliver an order to the students, obtained from the Colombo Fort court, the students did not accept the order.
The students marched along High Level Road and entered Galle Road passing the Thunmulla Junction and proceeded to Colpetty from Bamabalapitiya.
Police levelled a water and tear gas assault on the students as they entered Temple Trees from the Colpetty Junction.
