Pivituru Hela Urumaya general secretary MP Udaya Gammanpila charges that former president Chandrika Bandaranaike’s term was the darkest period in LTTE terrorism eradication.
The MP said so at a media briefing held yesterday in response to a statement the former president had made recently.
However former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa says that the contents of the former president’s statement with regard to him were false.
In a letter addressed to the chairman of asia broadcasting corporation private limited, Mr. Rayynor Silva, the former Defence Secretary pointed out that he was very regretful with regard to the contents of the former president’s statement.
The former defence secretary went on to say that the content the former president’s statement with regard to the ‘Mig’ fighter jets was also made in hatred against him.
The former defence secretary said that four ‘Mig 27’ fighter jets were bought by the Rajapaksa regime in 2006 and that the Bandrarnaike Kumaranatunga Government purchased seven ‘Mig’ fighter jets previously.
The letter says that three of the seven ‘Mig’ fighter jets purchased had been destroyed by 2005 and that the remaining four were upgraded in 2006.
Former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa also said in his letter that to his knowledge the relevant jets were not bought from a government firm but from a party having private ownership in Singapore.
It is also the former defence secretary’s view that the Government took all actions that it could for ensuring the transparency of all transactions that took place during the time he held the defence secretary post.
The former defence secretary also points out that as a result of this it was not possible any party to resort to corruption or abuse.
The former defence secretary emphasizes in his letter that during the time he held the post of defence secretary, while he did not receive any financial benefits other than his legally approved salary and pension, no other funds have been credited to a local or foreign account.
