President Maithripala Sirisena says that his predecessor had called for early elections to find an escape route for the country’s huge debt trap and added that another reason to hold an early election was his incompetence in facing the UN Human Rights Commission’s charges.
President Sirisena was speaking at a conference titled “Strong country, sustainable tomorrow – Let’s ensure 25% female representation”, organized for the female local government representatives at the SLFP headquarters in Colombo this morning.
Elaborating further President Maithripala Sirisena noted that he has posed a question to the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, as to why he called for an early election, when he could have remained in power for two more years.
The President also noted that in his opinion, an early election was called by the former President to evade the imminent economic crisis and due to the inability in facing the UNHRC resolution.
