Court acquits former Sri Lankan army officers accused of Kumarapuram massacre


Anuradhapura Provincial High Court acquitted six former Army officers who were accused of being involved in the 1996 massacre of 20 civilians of Kumarapuram in Trincomalee district.

Anuradhapura Provincial High Court acquitted the six former Army corporals as the seven member jury unanimously decided that the accused were not guilty.

The hearings of the case held continuously and the High Court Judge Manjula Thilakaratne announced the verdict yesterday.

The Attorney General filed cases against the soldiers on 101 counts.

All six corporals were suspended by the army commander from active service after the indictments were filed against them.
