A special discussion on re-amending the increased Value Added Tax was held at President’s office yesteday.
While close to 200 representatives of retail and wholesale Vendor unions participated in the discussion, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake also took part representing the Government besides the President.
However representatives of vendor unions who participated in the discussion said that a final decision on providing a VAT relief could not be reached at the discussion.
Expressing his views to media after the discussion Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake said that it was hoped to introduce a simple tax system in the future.
Meanwhile all Government Party Ministers and MPs assembled at President’s office under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe last night.
On this occasion UNP General Secretary Minister Kabir Hasheem also gave a special presentation about VAT.
On this occasion the UNP MPs pointed out that all Government ministers and MPs should shoulder a combined responsibility amidst certain groups raising their voice against the VAT.
It was also decided at this discussion that if amendments were required for VAT steps should be taken for it in the future.
