In the aftermath of Saturday's (Jul 2) attacks at an upmarket Dhaka restaurant which killed 20 people, details have emerged that one of the attackers had reportedly studied in a university in Malaysia.
Terrorism observer group SITE published photos on Saturday night while police also released images of the gunmen killed during the assault.
Three of them have been identified as Mir Samih Mubashir, Rohan Imtiaz and Nibras Islam, according to Bangladesh media reports.
The reports added that Nibras had enrolled at a private university in Bangladesh before arriving in Malaysia.
He is said to have studied at Australia-based Monash University’s Malaysia campus where he was reportedly a treasurer at the International Student Services department. He then returned to Dhaka and continued his tertiary education at a private institution.
Malaysian media said authorities are investigating if Nibras had studied at the campus.
In a press release on Monday (Jul 4), Monash University Malaysia said it met with Malaysian authorities but has not received any confirmation from them on the attackers' identities. It added that it’s assisting authorities with investigations.
The other two attackers were studying at private universities in Dhaka according to Bangladesh media.
Police and government officials have said the attackers were from well-off Bangladeshi families.
