The Cosmetics, Devices and Drugs Regulatory Authority or CDDA notes that prevailing laws are insufficient to regulate cosmetic surgeries. Following the death of a lady doctor at a cosmetic surgery in Bambalapitiya, the attention of many factions has been drawn towards introducing a legal framework for the regulation of such surgeries.
On Thursday the premises at which the lady doctor passed away were inspected by a special team including the Government Analyst, a Judicial Medical Officer and officials of the Ministry of Health.
Police say that the inspection was conducted on an order of the Colombo Magistrate’s Court. Stocks of drugs and medical equipment had been seized during the inspection. The doctor who operated the cosmetic surgery is currently in remand custody.
The Government Medical Officers’ Association meanwhile, claims to have notified the relevant authorities of the practices of the doctor in question, prior to this incident.
