A celebration devoid of ethnicity, caste or community


President Maithripala Sirisena in his message for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year said that what is special in this New Year celebration is the spread of festivity that transcends differences of ethnicity, caste and community, with important strides being taken to realize the need for unity among everyone.

This is a time to realize that throughout history our strength as a nation has come from the mutual understanding and co-existence that made us rise together to defend our Motherland.

The President also stated that as part of the Government’s vision to rid the country from drugs and alcohol, he anticipates that people would refrain from partaking or offering alcohol and tobacco during this festive occasion.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in his Sinhala and Tamil New Year message stated that it is a privilege for all people, being able to celebrate the New Year as a community which respects democracy, humanity and cultural values.

He stated that a peaceful environment is prevalent in the Country to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year freely.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa issuing a New Year message said that all citizens are fortunate to celebrate the New Year in a country where there are no gun shots fired.
