PM pays tribute to Heroes Monument at Tiananmen Square, Beijing

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, currently engaged in an official visit in the Republic of China, offered flowers to the Central Monument to People’s Heroes at the Tiananmen Square in Beijing last evening.
It is customary for the foreign delegates to honour the civilians and military members who sacrificed their lives during the long term struggle which paved the way for the establishment of new China.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was ushered to the Central Monument to People’s Heroes in a motorcade.
Chinese Military band played Sri Lanka’s National anthem and later amid the guard of honour by the Chinese military, Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe offered floral tributes to the heroes’ monument.
It was also reported that the entire delegation of Sri Lanka participated in the event.
The construction of the Central Monument to People’s Heroes in Beijing was initiated in 1949, during the time of Mao Tse Tung, who was the then Chairperson of the Communist party.
The monument was vested with the public on the 1st of May 1958.
Meanwhile, expressing views on Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s tour in China, as well as the China-Sri Lanka relations, India’s The Hindu newspaper stated that Sri Lanka has once again entered the map of the new Silk Road.
The paper also made special reference to the Colombo Port City, which is constructed under Chinese financial aid.
