Hindus around the world will celebrate Maha Shivaratri today


Maha Shivratri is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in reverence of the god Shiva.

Mahashivaratri Festival or ‘The Night of Shiva’ is celebrated with devotion and religious fervour in honor of Lord Shiva, one of the deities of the Hindu Trinity.

President Maithripala Sirisena issuing a message to mark the festival said the Hindus of Sri lanka who have a long tradition of friendship and harmony with all other communities will gain more strength in their search for unity through reconciliation and understanding with the spirit of the Maha shiva rathri festival.

Issuing a special message in view of the celebrations Prime Minister Ranil Wickemresinghe stated that Maha Shivaratri celebration is meant to drive away darkness with the light of knowledge and also to build unity and togetherness in society.
