Ted Cruz wins caucus in conservative state of Kansas

US Senator Ted Cruz won the Republican presidential caucus in the conservative state of Kansas, the first of a handful of contests held.

Projections broadcast by CNN and Fox television showed that with 43 per cent of the votes counted, the Texas senator had 49 per cent of ballots, a big lead over billionaire businessman Donald Trump, who had 24.7 per cent.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio was third according to early projections, with about 14.8 per cent of the vote.

Cruz greeted the news of his Kansas win while on the stump in the western state of Idaho, where he appeared before a crowd of jubilant supporters.
