Underworld gang that extorted ransom posed as Army Amila netted

In Tangalle yesterday, police arrested a woman and four males who had threatened people and extorted ransom from them posing as the underworld leader, Army Amila.
Police said that a 43-year-old retired army sergeant was arrested at Vitaarandeniya in Tangalle on 2nd this month, on questioning him it was possible to arrest the other suspects.
The three other male suspects and a woman suspect were residents of are Vitaarandeniya and Tangalle.
Information about the incidents had come to light following an attempt to threaten and extort 50,000 rupees from the General Manager of the Tangalle Polonnaaruwa Blind, Dumb and Deaf School.
Accordingly the retired army sergeant belonging to the gang was arrested on his arrival to collect the ransom.
Police Media Spokesman’s office said that Police investigations had revealed that earlier this gang had extorted 20, 000 rupees each on two occasions totalling 40,000 rupees from a Tangalle State Bank Branch Manager, and rupees 10,000 from another State Bank Manager and rupees 5000 from a Rest House Manager.
the suspects were produced before the Tangalle Magistrate’s court yesterday they were remanded till March 9th.
