Surukku and Laila fishing nets used in illegal fishing methods have been banned with effect from today.
These illegal fishing methods have been in use for over 32 years and according to research it was revealed that these methods pose a serious threat to aquatic plants and animals.
The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry stated that a new fishing method has been introduced to the fishermen where the net length should be at least 225 meters and height over 25 meters while the net should not touch the seabed.
The fishermen of Colombo, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota and the Eastern province should use the new fishing net beyond 7 miles from the coastal belt while other areas should utilize these nets beyond 10 miles.
Officials of the Navy and coast conservation as well as aquatic researchers have been advised to take legal action with regard to the ban.
