Wednesday, 17 February 2016 - 12:41
A protest launched by the residents of Ferguson Road against demolishing their houses has temporarily been halted.
The decision was made by the protesters after they had a discussion with police officers in charge of the area. Police stated the traffic blocks created due to the protest on Colombo Negombo road has eased up since.
The Urban Development Authority states that there are about 200 unauthorized structures by the Ferguson Road near Thotalanga in Colombo 14.
The residents had been given notice to evacuate from their homes a year ago and the protest started as the Urban Development Authority began demolishing the properties yesterday morning.
Congestion along main roads such as Colombo Negombo road, Baseline road and Peliyagoda Roundabout was heavy. The morning drive into work for others was gravely inconvenienced due to the protest.
Later police mediated a discussion between Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Paatali Champika Ranawaka and 10 representatives from the Ferguson neighbourhood.
