Sri Lanka’s lone medalist at Commonwealth Games returns home

Upon his return to the country on August 6, Sri Lanka’s lone medalist at the 20th Commonwealth Games, Sudesh Peiris said that his victory in Glasgow will be an encouragement for him at the upcoming Asian Games.

Sudesh Peiris, who competed in the 62-kilogramme men’s weightlifting event, was also the captain of the Sri Lankan Team that took part in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Peiris managed to lift 123 kilogrammes in Snatch and 150 kilogrammes in the clean and jerk for a total lift of 273 kilogrammes and went on to clinch the silver medal. This was Sri Lanka’s only achievement at the Commonwealth Games 2014.

Peiris said; “I had expectations of reaching for Gold this time. I performed my personal best. However, I had an injury on my left arm. I am satisfied with my achievement, despite of having an injury. I thought I would not be able to compete.”
