The ceremony to launch the Megapolis under which Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts are developed asa combined town planning project is now in progress.
President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe planted two Ironwood seedlings this morning at the Independence Square thereby marking the inauguration of the mega project.
The Megapolis project which is to be completed within 15 years will cost over 40 billion rupees.
150 city suburbs will also be developed in sync with the main project,with the aim of increasing economic development, social equality, environment protection and people satisfaction.
The Colombo Port City Project and the Katunayake Aero city project will also be included in the Megapolis project.
Addressing the Megapolis inaugural ceremony, Megapolis and Western Province Development Minister Paatali Champika Ranawaka said the Megapolis project will cause Sri Lanka to be highlighted on the global map .
