Indian fishermen on strike for boats

Fishermen in Tamil Nadu will be going on an indefinite fast beginning today, demanding the release of fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy .

N J Bose, the Fishermen's Association President and its Secretary, said a decision to this effect was taken today at a meeting where they also decided to demand the release of all boats.

The leaders also urged the Centre and the state government to take effective steps to secure the release of the fishermen.

They said fishermen from six districts did not set out to sea today in support of the demand.

On January 23rd, the fishermen had decided not to attend St Anthony's church festival at Katchatheevu islet in protest against the non-release of 67 boats.
