Chief Minister Jayalalithaa seeks release of Indian fishermen in Sri Lanka

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa Jayaram has requested the Indian Government to take expeditious steps to secure the release of six fishermen belonging to Tamil Nadu captured by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN), The Hindu reported.

In a letter to India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she urged him to direct the Ministry of External Affairs to also secure the release of sixty-eight fishing boats and nets.

Bringing to his notice two incidents of three fishermen each from Kottaipattinam in Pudukottai District and Sethubavachatram in Thanjavur District being captured by the Sri Lankan Navy, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said “These incidents are a rude shock, coming as they do, when Tamil Nadu is eagerly awaiting the home coming of the one-hundred-four fishermen whose release has been announced after several months of incarceration in Sri Lankan Jails.”
