People have engaged in a protest in Ambilipitiya town after a man who was injured during a clash with police died this morning.
Our correspondent stated that shops in the town have been shut and black flags are hoisted in protest of the police action.
Residents in the area have marched from New town to the Ambilipitiya Clock premises before engaging in the protest.
On the 4th January 29-year old Sumith Prasanna who received severe injuries during the clash with police was at a party being held in a house near Maha Ela in Ambilipitiya. Prasanna died this morning at Ratnapura hospital.
Seven persons received injuries during the clash and, two of them are still receiving treatment at Ambilipitiya hospital.
The organizers of the party made a statement that the clash started between the two groups after police demanded liquor from the party organizers. The wife of the deceased told our news team that police assaulted her husband.
Meanwhile demonstrators have demanded all shops in the town to be closed in protest of police action.
