The leaders of India and Pakistan shook hands and sat down to talk to each other on Monday on the sidelines of a climate conference in Paris, three months after official talks between their nations broke down amid escalating diplomatic tensions and cross-border violence.

A picture released by the Indian Foreign Ministry on Monday showed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Sharif, shaking hands. Mr. Modi offered a double handshake to a smiling Mr. Sharif.

A video, released by Mr. Sharif’s office, also captured the two leaders sitting side by side on a couch, deep in conversation.
