A new system replaces duty free vehicle permits

Five committee’s comprising members of parliament from the UNP have been appointed to undertake discussions about budget 2016.

This appointment happened following the two-day workshop held in Benthota where UNP MPs attended. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe chaired the workshop.

The leadership of these committees has been handed over to Ministers Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Harin Fernando, Eran Wickremaratne and Ajith P. Perera.

Topics to be discussed include fulfilling people’s aspirations, how the upcoming election should be contested and how dealings with media should be carried out.

A senior Minister, who participated in the workshop said that discussions were also had relating to the introduction of a new system that would replace duty-free vehicle permits for MPs and State officers.

In the budget 2016, it was decided to do away with the permit system through which Government provides relief in buying motor vehicles.

This decision was made, taking into account the abuse of the said permit granted once in five years and a 147- billion rupee tax revenue loss to the country during the past four years.

The workshop also focused on how to provide a fertilizer subsidy to farmers again.
