The report of the inspection in to the assault of the students to be submitted to the Prime Minister (PM) Ranil Wickramasinghe within next week. The Prime Minister appointed a commission on last 2nd to inspect the assault of the HNDA students by the police.
The Commission is headed by the Ministry of Power and Energy Secretary Professor M.B.S. Batagoda.
The Commission convened yesterday (09) at the Ministry and 7 students from the Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) and from the forum for the safeguarding of Higher National Diploma in Accountancy (HNDA) diploma participated.
The Committee is to discuss with the officials of the Education Ministry, University Lecturers and Police Officials.
The Hiru news contacted and queried the organizer of the Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) Lahiru Weerasinghe where he stated that he had not received the written documents of the decision by the Cabinet regarding the HNDA diploma being equaled to Degree level.
Meanwhile, inquiring the public witnesses in to the incident of assaulting of the HNDA student commenced yesterday. The Police Commission Secretary Ariyadasa Coorey stated that the public could give witness in this regard from 9am to 4pm.
The Police Commission appointed a three man commission to look in to the assault on the HNDA students on last Monday. Accordingly statements have been taken from the students and police officers who were involved in the assault incident. The HNDA students were subjected to gas, water and baton attack by the police while they were on protest last 29th.
However the cabinet decided to grant degree status to the HNDA diploma at the cabinet meeting held on last Thursday.
