Lawyers from Jaffna district, who met the Justice Minister Mr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe in Jaffna on Tuesday urged the government to release all the Tamil political prisoners in the jails without looking at their cases through criminal or legal procedures.

Adding further, Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said that the Attorney Generals (AG) Department’s special group is considering the release of some of the Tamil detainees, where there are no serious charges, no credible evidence. And others, in whatever possible case, will be given bail, both in High Court and the Magistrate Court.

Apart from that “they will also have a separate court, just to finish all those cases as soon as possible.”

Adding further, Minister Rajapakshe remarked on the Capital Punishment.

He pointed out that the there is a resolution adopted by the United Nations (UN) since 2008 in countries where the capital punishment is in operation – but in law they will not execute those punishments until 2017.

The lawyers met the Justice Minister at the complex of the High Court of Jaffna.
