Licences issued permitting pesticides including Gly-Phosate cancelled

All permits issued allowing the use of pesticides which include Gly-Phosate have been cancelled.

Pesticides Registrar Dr. G A W Wijesekara stated that the relevant gazette notification has already been issued.

He stated that the decision was taken after the chemical was found to be a reason for the Kidney decease spreading in certain regions of the country.

However, Tea Planters has said that banning the chemical may affect their industry.

When we inquired regarding such claims from Minister of Agriculture Duminda Dissanayaka, he stated that an alternate product was already in the market.
